2 CONT a prominent citizen of Caroline and served one term as Democratic sheriff. She

1 NOTE Thomas L Chaffinch, Democratic nominee for Sheriff, is a son of the late
2 CONT Solomon L. and Eliza Hignutt Chaffinch, held in fragrant memory by many of our
2 CONT older citizens, and was born at the Chaffinch homestead, near Williston, in
2 CONT 1847. On this farm  Mr. Chaffinch has resided all his life.  He is a
2 CONT thoughtful, practical man with a pride in his native country and with
2 CONT friendship and kindness for all.  Naturally his genial spirit has won many
2 CONT friends.  He who would have friends must manifest friendship, a saying founded
2 CONT upon Holy Writ.  Hence Mr. Chaffinch is a popular man. He no doubt in the years
2 CONT that are passed, could have before secured a nomination for a public office,
2 CONT but he chose the ranks of his party for service.  Mr. Chaffinch married Miss
2 CONT Alexine Chaffinch, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. John Chaffinch of Talbot
2 CONT County.  Their only child, a son, died in infancy.  Mr. Chaffinch is a man of
2 CONT cool judgment and thoughtful, but fulfills his obligations with promptness.  He
2 CONT is a man of physical courage, as well as discretion, and possesses all the
2 CONT qualifications necessary to be found in a good officer of the law, upon whom

1 NOTE Mr. Thomas L, Chaffinch, one of the county's best known citizens, died at his
1 NOTE home, near Williston, on Monday afternoon last, aged 67years, after an illness
1 NOTE of several months. The funeral was held at the home on Wednesday afternoon,
1 NOTE the Rev. J. E, Smith, pastor of the church at Williston, of which Mr. Chaffinch
1 NOTE was a member, officiating. Interment was made in 'Concord cemetery.  The floral
2 CONT tributes were very beautiful.  The pall-bearers were Messrs. Charles Beauchamp,
2 CONT Samuel G. Nuttle, Charles W. Hobbs, Henry M. Cade, James D. Neal, and Alplionso
2 CONT Meredith. Mrs. Alexine Chaffinch, the widow, survives, heir only child died in
2 CONT infancy. Mr. Chaffinch was a son of the late Solomon L. and Eliza Chaffinch,
2 CONT and was a lifelong resident of the Chaffinch homestead, with the exception of
2 CONT two years spent in Denton as sheriff- of the county. Few men held warmer
2 CONT friendships among their fellows, and there is real sorrow among them at his
2 CONT demise. Mr. Chaffinch was a zealous Democrat, and in addition to being sheriff

2 CONT Roland Chaffinch is a nephew.  The will leaves everything to Mr. Chaffinch's
2 CONT widow which the caveators claim is contrary to his fixed purpose of some 30
2 CONT years standing to die intestate so that the farm might go back to his brothers
2 CONT and sisters or their representatives in view of the alleged fact that his
2 CONT father conveyed the said farm to him without any consideration.  Issues will be
2 CONT prepared in the Orphans Court and the case will be heard in the Circuit Court.

1 NOTE Mrs. Mary Frances Thawley, widow of the late James H. Thawley, died Sunday
2 CONT night, December 17th, at her residence in Denton, after an illness of several
2 CONT weeks. Mrs. Thawley, a daughter of the late Solomon L. Chaffinch and Eliza Ann
2 CONT Hignutt, his wife, was born near Potter's Landing, January 5, 1849.  In her
2 CONT twenty-third year she was united in marriage to James H. Thawley, son of the
2 CONT late James and Elizabeth Thawley, of Caroline county. After the death in early
2 CONT childhood of her four children, Mrs. Thawley by motherly adoption raised from
2 CONT boyhood and is survived by four foster children: William Frazier,
1 NOTE Edward Hayes and Leslie Fillius, of Philadelphia, and Lewis Thawley McNeal, of
2 CONT Denton. One sister, Miss Etta, Chaffinch; one nephew, J. Roland Chaffinch, both
2 CONT of Denton, and one  niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Peters Wangler, of Syracuse, New
2 CONT York, also survive. During her entire life Mrs. Thawley has been actively
2 CONT identified with church work, living a life of devotion to the cause of her

2 CONT a brief illness. He had been in poor health for more than a year, but was very
2 CONT ill only a short time. Mr. Thawley is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Frances
2 CONT Thawley, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Chaffinch, four brothers,
2 CONT John F. and Joseph B. Thawley, of Indiana; and William T. and George W. Thawley
2 CONT of this county, and a sister, Mrs. Amy Sapp, of Michigan.  Mr. Thawley was a
2 CONT man of wide acquaintance, was interested in public affairs and was a positive
2 CONT force for the good of the community. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon
2 CONT last. Rev. G. L. Helshy, pastor of Mission Church, of which Mr. Thawley was a
2 CONT very zealous member, conducting the services. Interment took place at Concord
2 CONT cemetery.  The pall-bearers were Messrs. Samuel T. Norris, Frank P. Covey,
2 CONT Samuel Ellwanger, Samuel G. Nuttle, John L. Everngam, and Hayward B. Horsey.

1 NOTE Mrs Ella Liden, wife of Judge Edward W. Liden, died at her home in this place
2 CONT on Sunday morning last, after a long illness.  Some years ago the loss of her
2 CONT son, Earle, an estimable and promising young man, was a great blow to the
2 CONT family circle.  For more than two years Mrs. Liden had been in very feeble
2 CONT health, her strength stadily declinging until the end.  She was a member of and
2 CONT worshipper in the Methodist Episcopal Church and was on of the most faithful
2 CONT attendants, and was ready for the transition to the better life.  Mrs. Liden
2 CONT was a daughter of the late Solomon L. and Eliza Chaffinch, of Williston.  A
2 CONT resident of this place for a number of years, she was highly esteemed by all
2 CONT her acquaintances here, as elsewhere.  The surviving near relatives are the
2 CONT hisband, on son, Mr. W.E.W. Liden, of the Everngam store, who is now recovering
2 CONT from an illness; two brothers, Thomas L. and Tilghman F. Chaffinch; three
2 CONT sisters, Mrs. Mary F. Thawley, wife of James H. Thawley; Mrs. Annie H. Perers,
2 CONT wife of W.R. Peters, and Miss Sarah E. Chaffinch.  The funeral was held on
2 CONT Tuesday at the late home of the deceased, Rev. Dr. F.P. Roberts officiating.

1 NOTE The nominee for Sheriff, Edward Williams Liden, is one of the county's most
2 CONT substantial business men, and a most highly esteemed citizen.  He is very
2 CONT careful, prompt and painstaking in business,  and no one enjoys a better
2 CONT reputation for integrity.  Business men genderally will appreciate the services
2 CONT of such a man in the important office of sheriff.  Mr. Liden is a son of late
2 CONT Judge of the Orphan's Court William E. Liden, and is forty-three years old. 
2 CONT When a young man he was for several years engaged as clerk in the store of the
2 CONT late Thomas F. Johnson, at Williston.  Later he bagan the mercantile business
2 CONT on his own account at Smithville and has cotinued there ever since.  He is also
2 CONT interested in farming.  Mr. Liden never held any public office except that of
2 CONT postmaster of the villiage.  He is a regular attendee at the Smithville M.E.
2 CONT Church.  Mr. Liden married Miss Chaffinch, a daughter of the late Lewis
2 CONT Chaffinch.  Earle Liden, a son , is in the Commission business in Philadelphia.
2 CONT and Winnie Liden, another son, is a clerk in the store of Mr. O.M. Hignutt,

1 NOTE Mr. Edward Williams Liden, former Sheriff and Orphans' Court judge, died at his
2 CONT home, in Denton, at noon on Sunday last, after a period of ill health that,
2 CONT covered several months. He was about 70 years old.  In his early life he was
2 CONT engaged in the mercantile business at Smithville, coming to Denton after having
2 CONT been elected Sheriff of the county.  Subsequently he was a judge of the
2 CONT Orphans' Court for two terms. As an official and in his private life, he
2 CONT acquitted himself as a broad-minded, conscientious and painstaking public
2 CONT servant and high-toned gentlemen.  He was a son of the late William E. Liden, a
2 CONT gentleman of the old school, whose death occurred a few years ago. He was twice
2 CONT married, the first Mrs. Liden beingMiss Ella Chaffinch, of Potter's Landing.
2 CONT The widow was Miss Lillian Dukes, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Dukes, of Denton.
2 CONT Three brothers and two sisters also survive.  They are: Messrs. Gootee S.
2 CONT Liden, Shadrach M. Liden, Ernest Liden,  Mrs. Joseph Brown and Mrs. Louis N.
2 CONT Todd. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, Rev.

1 NOTE Mr. William Richard Peters, aged 56, died of bright's disease and complications
2 CONT at Dover on Friday of last week, after many months of ill health. The funeral
2 CONT was held on Monday last, Rev. Messrs. Helfenstein, pastor of the People's
2 CONT Church, and Alfred Smith, D. D., officiating. Interment took place at Lakeside
2 CONT cemetery, Dover. Mr. Peters, a native of Delaware, spent many years of his
2 CONT early life in Caroline county. For several years he was a salesman in the
2 CONT Williston store of the late B. Gootee Stevens, where he became widely known.
2 CONT Some years thereafter and for quite a long time he was a merchant at Hickman.
2 CONT He was a prominent Democrat and was elected Recorder of Deeds of Kent county,
2 CONT Delaware, and moved to Dover, where he resided until his demise. Mr. Peters
2 CONT married Miss Annie Chaffinch, youngest daughter of the late S. L. Chaffinch, a
2 CONT most excellent and popular young lady, who resided near Williston, Mrs. Peters
2 CONT died a few years ago. Their daughter, Miss Elizabeth, survives the parents. Mr.
2 CONT Peters was very energetic in business and fortunate in speculation and

1 NOTE Mr. Tilghman F. Chaffinch, postmaster and a well-known merchant of Hobbs, died
2 CONT of Bright's disease at his home in that town on Sunday last, aged 54 years. He
1 NOTE had been in bad health for a longtime and some months ago was at Mardela
2 CONT Springs for a while, in the hope of benefiting his health, but the improvement
2 CONT was only temporary. His strength failed rapidly during the cold weather of the
2 CONT winter. The deceased was a son of the late Solomon Lewis Chaffinch, of Potter's
2 CONT Landing. About twenty-three years ago he married Miss Jeannie Calloway, a
2 CONT daughter of the late Captain James B. Calloway and his widow and one son, Mr.
2 CONT J. Roland Chaffinch survive, as do one brother, Sheriff Thomas L. Chaffinch and
2 CONT three sisters, Mrs. James H. Thawley, Mrs. W. R. Peters and Miss Etta
2 CONT Chaffinch. Mr. Chaffinch was member of Ames M. P. Church, a man of kindly
2 CONT disposition and sterling integrity, and stood high among-his acquaintances.  He
2 CONT was a careful and successful businessman and had accumulated a competence. The
2 CONT funeral was held in the home on Tuesday afternoon, and interment took place in
2 CONT Denton cemetery.  Rev. Carroll Maddox was the officiating minister. The
2 CONT pall-bearers were Captain A. D. Branford, Messrs. Jonathan E. Towers, James H.
2 CONT Thawley, William R. Peters, John K. Calloway, and J. R. Ricards.  In a tribute
2 CONT to Mr. Chaffinch, a friend writes:  "His modesty and unassuming disposition won
2 CONT for him many friends; another link in friendship's chain is broken, a sweet
2 CONT chord in the harp of love yields no sound. He bore his sufferings with
2 CONT Christian grace, death to him had no terrors, being thoroughly prepared for the
2 CONT change, and unto such death is but the portals of life- "A path that must be

1 NOTE Our community suffered a great  loss, when in the early hours of last Sunday
2 CONT morning, a longtime resident of Hobbs, Mrs. O. J. Chaffinch, was called to the
2 CONT Great Beyond. She had  been confined to her bed for the past month suffering
2 CONT greatly most of the  time, but while sitting at her bedside it was easy to see
2 CONT her interest in  God's work and the advancement of  the Kingdom on earth. Being
2 CONT in the presence of such a person, inspires one to go forward in the cause of
2 CONT the Master, regardless of the circumstances that confront us. She always 
2 CONT seemed satisfied with the church of which she was a part, and was a  faithful
2 CONT member for many years. The church has lost a good member, and the community a
2 CONT good friend. She was a fine Christian character and was  much loved by all who
2 CONT knew her. She was the widow of the late T. F. Chaffinch, who for many years was
2 CONT a merchant in our village, and who passed away thirty years ago this month. For
2 CONT the past few years, Mrs. Chaffinch has resided with a niece, Mrs. B. B. Allen,
2 CONT who attended her with loving kindness. Funeral service was conducted by her
2 CONT pastor, the Rev. H. H. Schauer, assisted by the Rev. T. J. Turkington, at the
2 CONT home on Tuesday afternoon. The pall-bearers were Messrs. B. B. Allen, J. R.
2 CONT Ricards, C. Harvey Towers, G. Lawrence  Wilson, W: G. Holbrook and T. Houston
2 CONT Towers.  Interment was in Denton  cemetery. Surviving her are a son, Mr. J.
2 CONT Roland Chaffinch, president of the Denton National Bank; three grandchildren,
2 CONT Ellen, Jimmy and Louise Chaffinch; a brother, Mr. J. K. Calloway, of Baltimore;
2 CONT five nieces, Mrs. C. Harvey Towers, of near Williston; Mrs. B. B. Allen, of
2 CONT this place; Mrs. J. R. Richards, of Denton; Mrs.G. Lawrence Wilson, of Ridgely;
2 CONT and Mrs. Harvey Cohee of Baltimore, and a nephew, Mr. W. G. Holbrook, of this
2 CONT place,  Mr. J. K. Calloway, accompanied by Mrs. Carrie Scott, Mrs. Harvey I 
2 CONT Cohee and Mrs. L. Reyner Dukes, of Baltimore, attended Mrs. Chaffinch's
2 CONT funeral.  Mrs. J. R. Rickards spent several I days with her sister, Mrs. B. B.
2 CONT Allen, during the illness of their aunt, Mrs. Chaffinch. Rev. J. T. Bailey, a
2 CONT former pastor  of Mrs. O. J. Chaffinch, attended the  funeral on Tuesday.  Mrs.
2 CONT C. V. Clark is at home, after nursing Mrs. Chaffinch in her last illness. -

1 NOTE Funeral services were held yesterday for J. Roland Chaffinch an outstanding
2 CONT figure in Maryland banking, a leader in Caroline County affairs and for nearly
2 CONT a quarter century president of The Denton Nation Bank.  Mr. Chaffinch died
2 CONT Monday afternoon in the Memorial Hospital at Easton.  The Rev. B. DeFrees
2 CONT Brien, rector, officiating at the services at 2 p.m. in Christ Episcopal
2 CONT Church, Denton.  Burial was in Denton Cemetery.  Pallbearers were W. A. Stewart
2 CONT Wright, William C. Everngam, L. Reynes Dukes, Marion H. Smith, Carroll Bright,
2 CONT Dr. Herbert S. Martin, Charles E. Kirby, and Everett C. Townsend....Mr.
2 CONT Chaffinch whose banking career began when he enttered the directorate of the
2 CONT Denton National in 1912, had been in ill health for sometime.  Recently a
2 CONT patient at Memorial Hospital, he had returned to his desk in the bank last
2 CONT week, and was at home preparing to go to work, Monday morning when he suffered
2 CONT a stroke from which he died five hours later....Mr. Chaffinch was born in
2 CONT Potter's Landing, June 12, 1887, the son of Tilghman Filmore and O. Janie
2 CONT Calloway Chaffinch.  In 1909 he graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle,
2 CONT PA., and took up the merchantile business, at Hobbs, where he also was
2 CONT postmaster..On August 12, 1915, Mr. Chaffinch Married Lenore Clark Greenly, who
2 CONT survives him, as do their three children, Mrs. Ellen Chaffinch Clark of Easton;
2 CONT Mrs. Anne Louise Chaffinch Clendaniel of Denton, and James R. Chaffinch Jr. of
2 CONT Hobbs, cashier of The Denton National Bank.  In 1912, Mr. Chaffinch became a
2 CONT director of the Denton National,  and in 1918, vice-president.  He was elected
2 CONT president in 1926, a post he held until his death....Although Mr. Chaffinch had
2 CONT held several post of leadership in the Community's affairs, leaders of Central
2 CONT Delmarva's growth knew him best for his behind-the-scenes roles of support,
2 CONT guidance, and counsel, which, as one of Caroline County's civic leader said
2 CONT this week, "provided the real spark to get things done."  A member of the
2 CONT County Board of Education from 1924 to 1926, Mr. Chaffinch was chariman of the
2 CONT County Welfare Board from 1925 to 1941.  He was a charter member of the Denton
2 CONT Rotary Club, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a member of the

1 NOTE The residence of Dr, J. W. Hignutt, Potter's Landind, was the scene of a pretty
2 CONT wedding on Tuesday evening last, the contracting parites being W. R. Peters,
2 CONT Jr. and Miss Annie H. Chaffinch, niece of the Doctor.  The ceremony was
2 CONT performed at 7 o'clock in the presence of relatives and friends, by Rev. W.L.P.
2 CONT Bowen, after which an informal reception was held till 9 o'clock, when the
2 CONT newly-wedded couple left for their future home at Hickman, Del.  Messrs. Ed
